How a case runs in Denver
Denver is the only jurisdiction in Colorado where the city and the county are the same entity, and it has its own county court system separate from the state county courts. Misdemeanors, traffic offenses and municipal matters are heard in Denver County Court; felonies are filed in the Second Judicial District.
Most of our appearances happen inside a four block radius of the office. The Lindsey-Flanigan Courthouse holds the district, county and juvenile divisions, the Denver Detention Center is directly across Colfax, and the federal courthouse is a short walk east.
Denver's district attorney's office runs several diversion programmes, and eligibility is usually assessed early. Getting a first offense theft or a low level drug case into one of those, before a plea is entered, is the single most valuable thing that can happen in the first month.
Three things specific to Denver
- Denver County Court handles its own DUI docket; the DMV revocation runs separately and on a much faster clock.
- The Denver Detention Center at 490 West Colfax processes most city arrests, with advisements held on the next court day.
- Municipal charges brought under the Denver Revised Municipal Code are a different animal from state charges, with different sealing consequences.
